Slice drop – Forehand and Backhand

Priority Checklist:

  1. Get low
  2. Keep wrist locked.
    • Angle of paddle doesn’t change from the start of stroke to the end of the stroke.
  3. Elbow locked as well
  4. Elbow bent close to the body
  5. Footwork: move to position so the ball is in your pocket.
  6. Compact soft shot. Almost like a slice dink from further away.
  7. Put your weight on your front foot AND use your body momentum to move through the ball.
    • It’s more of a continuous motion than a split step you do for a drive.
    • Your body is doing everything
    • Don’t hit the ball on your backfoot.
  8. Spin adds control
  9. Consistency: she does the same shot selection every time so she gets really consistent with it.

Advantage compared to a flatter drop like a scoop drop, the backspin adds control and makes it harder for opponents to do it.

Word of warning: if ball is shoulder height and above, don’t hit a slice drop, just drive it.
